Item:  Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Chastain (Elizabeth W. White) of Abington, Virginia by Samuel Shaver

Price:  $18,000.00

Description:
Samuel Shaver was one of Tennessee's earliest artist who was very active in the Rogersville area around 1850 to about the Civil War. He was well known for portraits of individuals with backgrounds having some allusion to the sitters profession or residence. His paintings are well collected and exhibited in Tennessee as well as Southern museums. This pair of portraits may have been wedding portraits and the log building behind the male figure has a blacksmith forge on the front porch glowing red. It appears that there are two African American figures on the porch working with the forge. Mrs. Chastain is shown holding a book with fingerless gloves. This pair of paintings are classic Samuel Shavers. Priced for the pair.

The face of the clock is wooden and has American shields painted in each of the four corners with a floral display in an oval format in the broken arch top.
