In the early part of the century, Americans loved items from Exotic locations and the factories in Europe worked overtime getting tapestries for the walls of Americans. Many featured Arabs on Camels in exotic settings that were vastly different from America. This features travelers arriving into an oasis with the gates of the buildings open behind for the viewers eyes to gaze into ladies are shown in native dress and even the sellers are showing their wares on oriental style rugs. The tapestry also has a slight fringe of about one half inch around the edges. The condition is good and visually the image is full of action.

Title: 1930s Needlework Cottage Scene

Description

During the 1930s, needleworkers like to recreate images of a nostalgic and wistful past. The needlepoint here shows a red colored roofed house in a wooded setting, almost in an abstract format. There are green trees with red floral blossoms making one think of spring. A former owner placed this in a Victorian frame that has porcelain knobs in the center of the designs, making this have a look of a much earlier time. The picture has been cleaned at some recent point and placed with an acid free matting in the frame that will protect and preserve it for future use. For needleworkers or Victorian lovers, this would be a good decorative accessory for traditional furniture.

Title: Handmade Lace Exhibit Piece

Description

Years ago, ladies of gentility made handmade lace or crocheted. This framed piece appears to be a start of an exhibition piece to show what all types of lace were available to the maker. There is no question drawn work, tatting, lace, crocheting, and embroidery, along with other types unknown to me. The needlework was probably framed in the 1960s and is no doubt old. Nothing like this has been made in years. This is an interesting piece and the condition for its age is very good.

Title: 19th Century Handmade Lace Floral Theme in Walnut Shadow Box Frame

Description

The ladies ot Brussles made some fine lace. Numerous travelers to their region purchased the lace and took it home to frame or use in other textiles. This extremely well done lace floral designed basket in oval format shows a well done and wide lipped basket holding flowers with an almost web effect of lines going to an outer border. The effect is one of charm and old. At some point, the frame has been refinished, today thee are minor scratches from normal wear, but this just adds to the overall impact of the piece. I would almost guess that this was purchased in England years ago, cleaned in the 1950s in the US, the velvet backing changed, and nothing done to it for the last 50 years. The visual appearance could not be better and the overall impact is one of Victorian theme.

Title: Pair Handmade Victorian Lace Birds in Walnut Twig Frames

Description

The British were best known for travels to the Continent. While there, they sought out good craftsmen who made quality items. This pair of lace birds are extremely well executed, handmade, and around 100 years of age. Probably in the original frames, twig carving on the sides of the walnut frames, the rust colored background was probably replaced in the 1950s and has now mellowed to a very good old appearance with the lace. There is no apparent surface problems to the pair of lace birds, and they were apparantly always meant to be a pair as they are facing each other. The combs on the birds heads almost resemble hats and they are certainly interesting in appearance. At some point, the picture frames have been refinished, probably when the velvet lining was changed and they now just glow with color. Priced for the pair.
