Description

The coldness of winter is felt in this Russian image of two travelers in a sleigh with a single horse pulling them along a figure along the road stops with his hat off in his right hand perhaps asking for assistance. The bare birch trees simply make the cold more painful and the color of the sky makes one hope for spring. This was purchased in Maine where there is a large Russian community and the age is uncertain but would appear from style and subject to be in mid 20th century. The colorful decoration on the back of the sleigh adds a nice touch.

Title: 19th Century Silver Niello Drinking Horn

Description

In Czarist Russia the nobility enjoyed privileges that today we only dream about. The aristocrats were almost able to do anything that they wanted. The feel of this horn is simply silky smooth and the niello decoration of the band and base area as well as a bird head on the tip end only adds to the exotic and old world appeal. When you see this you think of wealthy aristocrats drinking from this and fair damsels getting ready to be in distress. The chasing on this horn is very fine and it almost makes you want to get the Stoly bottle and start wishing for times past in style.
