It is absolutely impossible to describe the hand work extending on the edges to the rim down to the center on this compote. The silver piece is completely handmade and would basically have a floral design as one could expect to see in a tightly woven oriental rug. Title: Roman Glass Tear Bottle Ca. Ad 200
|
| |
Description
In 1904, an East Tennessee resident made a trip to Europe and the Middle East. She brought home antiquities. This object has a tag that states this is a Roman Tear Bottle, AD 200. Lots of silica and almost crusty fish to the iridescent glass that does have old cracks and possibly old breaks but tough to say. The glass is no doubt old, and the vial or bottle is 2 1/4 inches tall by almost 1 inch across the top dimension at the widest point. According to old lore, widows cried tears when their spouse died and it was buried with the body. |
